Recruiting Report: Gavin Moeller (2017)
Gavin Moeller of West Fargo Sheyenne just finished his final year with ECI and now he’s facing his senior season with the Mustangs. The 6-foot-6 power forward has high expectations and is hoping his senior class ends their career on a high note.
The Mustangs went 11-14 last season but the good news is that seven of the top eight scorers returning including leading scorers Chase Erickson, a guard, and Collin Trottier as well as sophomore-to-be Christian Kuntz, Carter Bonnema, and Moeller who gave his team seven points and 4.5 rebounds a game last year shooting 46 percent from the field and 36 percent at the arc.
“My high school teammate Collin Trottier and I will continue to do what we’ve been doing for awhile, going to the gym every day and putting in work,” said Moeller.
Gavin and Collin are basketball constants which is why they played with ECI in eight events in the spring and summer a month after finishing their four months of basketball as high school juniors. The experience was invaluable as Moeller works towards a strong senior year and college basketball.
“My top experience playing AAU was definitely the NY2LA tournament in Milwaukee my 15u year, we went to the final four in the platinum division,” said Gavin. “It stands out to me because of the competition we got to play against, which is what I loved about AAU.
“I joined AAU so that I could be recruited and so that I could play against high level players and that’s what I got. Obviously players from Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, etc. play a lot different than the kids in North Dakota.
“Another experience I’ll take from my 14u-17u years was playing with the top players in North Dakota and being able to build relationships with players across the state of North Dakota, not just the players in my home city. It’s really nice to know basically every top player in North Dakota whether they played with ECI or North Dakota Phenom.”
A basketball brotherhood is what Gavin is talking about which is something that AAU brings out of so many players. Guys like the competition of AAU, they like traveling, but usually the thing they like the most is building friendships with others who love basketball as much as they do and what to prosper from the game in many ways.
It prepares guys for playing college basketball with new teammates and against a higher level of competition and Moeller will play college basketball.
“The colleges that have shown me interest are University of Mary, Minot State, Hamline University, St Johns, Lake Region State, University of Jamestown, and Concordia-Moorhead,” Moeller told Prep Hoops.
That’s local NSIC schools, three schools in the MIAC of Minnesota, and a couple other local North Dakota programs at the NAIA and D1 junior college level.
“I have been to the University of Mary and Minot State campuses, both were awesome,” said Moeller. “As far as upcoming visits, on August 19th I’m going to St. Paul to visit Hamline and then on the 20th I’ll be in St. Cloud visiting St. Johns (located in Collegeville, MN).
“I’m looking forward to both visits and meeting all of the coaches and seeing what each school has to offer. As I go along in the process I look forward to more visits and meeting coaches.”
