Apollo had a heartbreaking ending to their season last year as they were upset by Sunrise Mountain and Division-1 bound Elijah Thomas Elijah Thomas 6'5" | SF Skyline Prep | 2022 AZ . However, they return the majority of their core. Translation: Holland Woods and Dre Marin, who were regarded by many as a top five duo-backcourt, are back and ready to for their Senior campaign.
Currently, Marin has offers from, “Idaho State and Portland State.” Moreover, he has received interest from, “UTEP, Dartmouth, West Point [Army], Weber State, Pepperdine, Central Arkansas, Northern Colorado, NAU, and UCSB.”
I highly expect the list of offers to grow by the conclusion of his senior year for multiple reasons. First, his skills have put him in a position to be a low/mid NCAA Division-1 prospect. He has good handle, can shoot off the catch as well as create high percentage shots for himself, has a really high basketball IQ, and he plays tough on ball defense. He is exactly what coaches want in a player. In addition to being quite talented, he has positioned himself to play at the next level as he carries a “3.9” GPA. It is tough to find solid prospects who not only fit the bill academically but exceed it.
Marin has played a good portion of his career next to talented guards like Woods which has forced him to play more of a combo guard role. Due to this, Marin has worked very hard “on a lot of point guard skills” this off-season. With that said, this is also a huge benefit as he is versatile. He can guard multiple positions as he is strong, quick, and savvy.
Lastly, he is a very coachable young man. He has played his high school career with his father as his head coach. Unlike some circumstances, there was absolutely no favors done for him. In fact, he has “definitely been the hardest on me and it hasn’t always been easy but everything he does has only made me tougher and better” were some of the words he used to express what it has been like to play for his father. He was also quick to mention that “It has been great! He’s an amazing coach, and I love playing for him” when discussing what it was like to play for his father.
Apollo is the clear cut favorite at this point to win the 5A state title. In order for them to do so, Marin will have to continue the high level of play that has made him one of the toughest players to play against in this state. Make sure to catch a game to see this elite level backcourt.
