The versatile 6’4″ Smith spent this summer playing with the South Central Fury 17U team. He helped led the Fury to a couple of tournament wins this summer, including the championship of the Threat Hoops Warm-Up in St. Louis in early July.
Smith is a strong post player, where he spends a lot of time with his high school team. He is also a nice perimeter player who can get to the basket and finish with athleticism. On more than one occasion, Smith got to basket strong and finished with a slam dunk. When he attacks the basket hard, he is also able to hit the stop and pop jumper.
“I’ve improved my athleticism in the past two years,” Smith said. “I grew about four inches coming into my sophomore year and it all started to come to me. I feel I can shoot the ball pretty well. I have a good first step and a pull up jumper.”
Smith’s size and versatile skills have helped Licking continue to be a strong Class 3 program. As a sophomore, he was a solid starter on a team that won 25 games and a district championship. As a junior last season, Smith was an All-Frisco League selection as well as an All-District selection. He returns for his senior season in hopes of leading Licking to another successful season.
“We’re going to be pretty good this season,” Smith said. “We’ve got a lot of guys returning who are coming back stronger and with more experience. Our goal is to win conference, districts and hopefully get to the Final Four.”
