Continue ReadingLa Joya Community High School should be filling quite confident as far as this upcoming season is concerned as they return one of the best point guards in the entire state. Tre Mitchell 6’1″ PG 2017 will look to lead the group after averaging over 13 points per game and about 3 assists per game.
Mitchell played this last club season for the I-10 Celtics where he was a premier guard for the team. He brings a lot of things to the table that should attract High/Mid NCAA Division II and NAIA Division I suitors. Mitchell has good length and wingspan for a guard. This natural athleticism enables him to guard most 1 and 2 guards while also being able to get a first get step on the offensive end as he is able to push the ball out in front after the move. Moreover, he has crafty footwork that enables him to put the defensive player at a disadvantage. Lastly, he is an above average shooter from deep which forces defenders to play him around the 3 point line.
In addition to being a consistent scoring threat and possessing more length than most point guards. He plays with a very high basketball IQ. He sees the floor exceptionally well and does a great job of dictating the tempo of the game. Furthermore, he does a good job of getting teams into sets and putting his teammates in a position to be successful.
It is also important to note that he has the grades to play at an array of skills. In fact, Mitchell has a “3.5 GPA”. This should open many doors for himself to have the opportunity to move on to the next level. Although he could play at a higher level, a NCAA Division 3 school would be able to get him on their roster.
With that said, Mitchell admitted that he will need to “get stronger, a little more explosive, tighter handle, and be more consistent.” Like most high school prospects trying to transition to the college game, Mitchell will need to put some weight on as a means of being able to compete at the more physical level. If he is able to do that, he has a lot of upside due to his craftiness with the ball and deceptive footwork.
Despite the fact that he possesses the intangibles and skill level to play this game at the next level, Mitchell does not have any offers or interest at this time. This will be a huge season for him as he hopes to use it as a means of earning the opportunity to play this game at the next level.
