Continue ReadingIt is always an exciting time when club ball winds down and prospects settle into school and prepare for season. One of the most interesting aspects of that is seeing new faces. While most new faces you will see at a school are transfers from other local schools, making them familiar faces in the Arizona basketball community, every now and then, an out of state talent comes to the Grand Canyon State. As is the case with 6’7″ forward Nikc Jackson, who is moving to Tucson, AZ from Michigan. Prep Hoops was able to catch up with this new prospect to get to know him.
When asked what his aspirations are with the game of basketball, Nikc stated that he wants to improve his skills and become the best player that he can in hopes to attain a free college education through basketball. He seems to be on the right track, as he has already garnered interest from Central Michigan, IUPUI, and University of Detroit among others, though he has yet to receive his first scholarship offer. It is easy to see why colleges would be interested in a 6’7″ prospect with a 7′ wingspan that spent the last summer playing with The Family EYBL team out of Detroit. Despite the impressive physical tools that he possesses, it is his approach to the game that should carry him a long way.
After acknowledging that he needs improvement in strength, he said that his goals are to improve on his ball handling, court vision, and outside shooting, and of course, to help his team win a championship. His humility may be explained best by his circumstances.
Asked why he plays the game of basketball, he answered “because I love the game, and with all of the moving my family does, it gives me a way to connect with others. Although I’m not the most social person and I don’t have a long history with the new people that I meet, on the court, I feel like my teammates and I are brothers. I feel like the fans in the stands become my family.”
Nikc Jackson seems like a young kid that appreciates the game of basketball and will give his all to succeed. He describes himself as “Goal oriented and I strive to make myself an everyone around better as a player and as a person”. We look forward to seeing this young man in action at Sunnyside high school.
