In fact, a number of the big contributors for the program this past season, in which they were able to claim their second state title in three years, were upper classmen. However, this was not the case this past season at Shadow as a couple of key underclassmen, specifically Jovan Blacksher and Jaelen House, were essential to the team’s success. Their minutes leave little to the imagination as to who Coach Michael Bibby will be turning to with so many talented players leaving the program.
5’10 PG Blacksher is a talented 2019 prospect who has improved tremendously this past off-season as he enjoyed stints with the I-10 Celtics and the EYBL sponsored Phoenix Phamily. He stands out due to his solid handle and good chance of pace with the basketball. Moreover, he is a physically strong young guard who is able to force opposing guards into difficult positions on the court.
Blacksher is also capable of attacking the rim at a high rate and knocking down the 3. He is an above average athlete with a good first step that has improved over this summer. He also looks more confident and comfortable as he enters a season in which much will be expected of him.
Although Blacksher was a top tier 8th grader, with many classifying him as the best in the class, and not much changing as a freshman as he has still earned the right to be near the top of the list, he has still not received any offers or interest from next level suitors.
There is plenty of time for the aspiring sophomore. However, I would not anticipate this lasting much longer as he moves forward into a prime time role for one of the state’s best teams who hopes to keep their crown. In addition, playing on the national level with Phoenix Phamily’s EYBL group should aid in gaining him much deserved attention.
In fact, his goal for this next season is to “get my name out there nationally and pick up some offers.” He also noted that as far as schools are concerned, he wants to attend a school where he “feels comfortable and has a good relationship with the coaching staff and teammates.”
In regards to his goals for the upcoming season, he wants to do whatever he can to aid the team in “winning a ring.” As stated earlier, Shadow Mountain lost many key members to their two state titles; however, Blacksher and House should be essential members to Shadow staying relevant in 4A.
