Continue ReadingThe summer is over and we are starting to clean out our notebooks from July. We are digging deep into our notes on a few under-the-radar types of players and guys we want to track this coming high school season. Here is a look at some of those in the 2019 class.
Will Whatley – 6’5 C 2019 – Frankton / Club Elite East 2019
Will is a tall post with a bit of a face-up game. He’s pretty mobile and able to attack off the bounce in the mid-range. He likes to use his spin move off the dribble to create space near the rim. Has some upside and worth tracking this winter.
Dylan Hiner – 6’0 SG 2019 – Knightstown / Club Elite East 2019
Dylan is a solid combo guard prospect that might fall on the scoring side of things right now. He’s got decent size and a really solid perimeter jumper. Great form and a guy who can get the shot off quickly. Can rip off threes pretty well.
Drew Cvelbar – 6’2 SG 2019 – Columbus North / Grassroots Indiana 2019
Drew is a solid two-guard with size still coming. Coming into his sophomore season, Drew could find time as a shooter off the bench as he can let it fly pretty well. He’s got the type of body that looks like he is going to continue to grow and could allow his game to change in the next 12 months.
Darius Thompson – 6’5 C 2019 – Kokomo / Grassroots Indiana 2019
Darius is a big, strong post player with good size and some strength already. He centers his game around his ability to play with his back to the basket. However, he showed flashes of a face-up game but will take some time to develop that in fully. He can be a guy that plays the 4 / 5 with some versatility down the line.
Corey Landers – 6’1 SG 2019 – Bishop Noll / Indiana Elite Region 2019
Corey is a tall guard with a little bit of an aggressive game. The Region product is a guy who is going to attack the rim a lot and look to get you to bite on it to open up his perimeter game later in the game. He’s got some effort in his play that shows through on defense as well.
Andrew Shelton – 6’5 PF 2019 – Bloomfield / Indiana Elite Tier Ten 2019
Shelton is another in a long line of Bloomfield players with size. The 1A program continues to churn out college players and Shelton looks like he could be another one. He’s already got good size and a decent jumper despite playing more like a post player. He’s a guy that can be tracked this coming high school season.
Tyreese Nibbs – 6’1 PG 2019 – Ben Davis / Indiana Faith 2019
Nibbs is going to do something in college, that much is for sure. He’s a great athlete that plays basketball, football, and track. Nibbs is a taller guard with a thin frame but great speed and can create space with his ball handling. Very creative with the ball in his hands and lots of upside.
Rylan Detling – 6’5 PF 2019 – Frankton / Indiana Faith 2019
Detling has a lot of things going for him and a couple more years at Frankton should really help to develop his game. He’s a tall, lean forward that can face-up and make plays but doesn’t shy away a ton from playing with his back to the rim. He has a solid hook from 8’ and can face-up to shoot in the mid-range as well. Needs strength and to be a little more aggressive but the room is there to get better quickly.
Michael Johnson – 6’5 SF 2019 – Concord / Tipping Point Lucchese 2019
Michael was a guy we saw this past winter that had some potential and it looked like he grew up a bit in the past 6 months. He was a little more filled out and a little stronger with his body. He still doesn’t have a ton of speed but his thick lower half really helps him with positioning. Long term developer but upside is there.
Rilye Cox – 6’4 SF 2019 – LaVille / Tipping Point Lucchese 2019
Rilye is a guy that will have to be watched over the next few years. Has some size now and could grow a bit more but fits well as a wing with a good mid-range game already in hand. He has a thin but long frame. Strength and toughness are needed but if he gets a little of each, he could be a player.
Ross Welch – 6’5 SF 2019 – Cathedral / WBC Indy Premier 2019
Ross is a big wing player with a lean frame and some assertiveness to his game. He has a little bit of length but is more well-built at this stage than most. He has to keep his head on his shoulders because he plays really hard and gets into the game. Could be a plus for him down the line if he puts it all together.
Brennan Neal – 6’3 SG 2019 – Whiteland / Indiana Elite Force 2019
Brennan was a guy I didn’t get to see during the high school season but heard enough about. Now, with a couple views, he fits the bill of a guy to track this winter. With great size, Neal can be a big time scoring threat from the perimeter. He can knock down jumpers and take his guy off the bounce. Not to mention he has a little flair to his game.
