Although it is front loaded with a lot of Forwards and a couple of Centers, there are plenty of high profile point guards. As it currently stands, there are only two point guards who have committed to next level schools, Marcus Shaver and Saban Lee.
#2 Alex Barcello 6’2 PG Corona Del Sol
Barcello appears to be closing in on a decision as he has listed his top five schools publicly. The list includes Arizona, Butler, Indiana, Stanford, and Virginia. Early in his career, Barcello was a pass first point guard who shot the basketball at an extremely high rate. His court vision and basketball IQ made him a premier candidate. However, as talent has graduated and left Del Sol, Barcello has molded his game into that of a score first guard. He is the top rated 2017 point guard prospect.
#4 Holland Woods 5’11 PG Apollo
Woods participated with Phoenix Phamily on the EYBL circuit this past summer and performed quite well at the Peach Jam Finals. As it currently stands, he has received a lot of interest from “LIU Brooklyn, NAU, ASU, UCLA, and Arizona.” In addition to receiving interest from a couple of top tier schools, Woods’ holds offers from “LIU and Portland State.” Woods and the rest of the talented Apollo team will make a lot of noise this next year as they are the early favorite to win the 5A state title.
#9 Dre Marin 5’11 PG Apollo
Woods’ running mate Marin has made a name for himself as one of the state’s best on ball defenders. He is also in the elite category as far as 2017 shooters are concerned. He dictates the tempo of the game and plays relatively mistake free basketball. In lieu of this, he has offers from “Idaho State and Portland State” as well as interest from “UTEP, Dartmouth, West Point, Weber State, Pepperdine, Central Arkansas, Northern Colorado, NAU, and UCSB.”
#17 Colten Kresl 6’0 PG Chaparral
Kresl played at an extremely high level this past live period. In fact, he was included in the top 40 game at the West Coast Elite game. In his last update, he has received interest from over 13 schools and currently possesses an offer from NAU. With that said, his man interest is from “Portland State, Grand Canyon and Pepperdine” with Sacramento State coming into town to watch him soon. Kresl is a guard who has the ability to take over a game due to his great change of pace and shooting abilities. He has great court vision as well.
#21 Elijah Mead 6’1 PG Camelback
Mead currently has interest from Central Arizona and Chaminade University despite the fact that he has been an under the radar player for the class of 2017 the entire time that he has been in Arizona. However, many, including college coaches, have made mention to the fact that they believe he could end up being a low NCAA Division-1 caliber player in the right system.
#25 Donald Carter 6’0 PG Cesar Chavez
Carter has made name for himself in the high school ranks as early as his freshman year. He is yet another talented guard who has had conversations with NCAA Division-1 coaches. However, he does not have any offers at this point. As the season progresses, I would be surprised if he did not have at least a couple of next level options.
#31 Max Moses 6’0 PG/SG Arcadia
Moses has one of the best basketball IQ’s out of any of the players on this list. For a high school player, he dictates the tempo of the game at a remarkable level. In addition, he has a smooth shot and can connect at a high level. He does not force shots as well. Currently, he has attended the elite camp at Point Loma and will be attending the UCSD elite camp. He has offers from Whitman and Lake Forest College. Due to his academic abilities and style of play, both schools would be a great fit and they would be landing a diamond in the rough.
#32 Cody Carmichael 5’9 PG Ironwood
If Elijah Mead is the most unheard of player in the class of 2017 who is capable of playing at the next level, Carmichael is right behind him.
Carmichael has received interest from a couple of NCAA Division-2 and 3 schools as well as NAIA schools. He was a sectional honorable mention player last year and was 2nd team All-PUSD. He is a high NAIA Division-1 or NCAA Division-2 player. Look for Carmichael to have a big year as he leads Ironwood in a successful senior campaign.
#35 Treyvon McCray 5’10 PG Copper Canyon
Copper Canyon is going to have a younger roster than they have had in years past; thus this will be a good test and opportunity for McCray to show his ability to lead the team from the point guard position. McCray is a mid to low NCAA Division-2 prospect at this point. He can shoot the basketball well and does a great job of attacking the rim. His finishing abilities have improved, and he is playing more aggressively.
#37 Tre Mitchell 6’1 PG La Joya
Mitchell uses his length extremely well and gets into the lane as well as anybody in this class. He does not force shots and does a great job of kicking to the open man. Mitchell has managed to go relatively unrecruited despite playing for Team Bibby and the I-10 Celtics as well as playing solid minutes as a Sophomore and Junior at La Joya. He is a Mid NCAA Division-II and NAIA Division-I prospect.
