AGE would again be without the services of 2 starters, 6’8″ 2019 Forward Ethan Spry and 6’4″ 2018 Forward Gabe Zdrale as both were still recovering from foot injuries. Despite their absence, AGE went through the UAA Finals with a very respectable showing despite only managing a 1-3 record for the event including two narrow losses to UAA members Atlanta XPress 60-55 and Team Charlotte 58-57. AGE was led by its big four all week in 2019 6’0″ PG Reed Myers, 2018’s 6’5″ Wing Brennen Davis, 6’5″ Wing Jared Martin and 6’7″ Forward Mason Johnson. Myers avgd 17.8 ppt for the entire weekend followed by Johnson with 12 ppg and Davis with 11 ppt and Martin with 10.1 ppg.
Myers despite playing up on a 16u squad continues to be the consummate leader and decision maker for AGE. Rarely making mistakes and getting his teammates involved, playing solid defense and proving that he can handle the pressure against bigger and more athletic guards (as was on display against Jeremiah Saunders of the Atlanta XPress scoring 23 points and only 2 turnovers) and knocking down big shots. Myers shot 58% from behind the arc the entire weekend tallying 19 against Team Charlotte & 18 against the South Carolina Raptors.
Davis continued to be the ultimate disrupter in Atlanta deflecting passes, blocking shots, getting rebounds & steals and taking charges. Davis averaged 11 rebounds per game including a game high 16 boards in a 60-54 win over the South Carolina Raptors.
Johnson continued to show his versatility as both an inside and perimeter Forward with his ability to knock down threes score with both hands in the post and rebound and pass with a cerebral deftness. Johnson can play multiple positions from 2-5 and will again be someone to keep your eye on.
Jared Martin, while not at his best in Atlanta, still demonstrated why he is one of the top 2018 wings on the West Coast with his smooth and quick jump shot, an ability to play above the rim and rebound and defend other long and athletic wings.
2019 6’8″ Forward Shaun Wahlstrom (Verrado HS) continued his vast improvement from the Spring filling in for Spry with solid rebounding and greatly improved passing out of the high post. Keep your eye on him.
The marquee matchup was against the Atlanta XPress and 6’8′ 2018 Wing Khavon Moore and 6’4″ 2018 Guard Jeremiah Saunders where Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari, Auburn HC Bruce Pearl and NAU Head Coach Jack Murphy were courtside for the entire contest along with coaches from Florida, Wake Forest, Colgate, Michigan, Ohio State, GCU, Pepperdine and San Jose State all in attendance plus others. AGE was in the game till the bitter end had held a 52-51 lead with 2:00 minutes left and ultimately fell 60-55 at the end. AGE was led by Reed Myers with 23 points including a 7/11 shooting performance from behind the arc while Brennen Davis tallied 8 points and 8 rebounds as did Mason Johnson with 8 and 8 as well.
AGE will travel to Las Vegas this week to participate in the FAB 48 in the 16u Invitational Division.
