Deaton, Jennings Continuing Great Play In STL
After the first week of the July Live Period, Grassroots Indiana 2017 Blue was one of the better teams we saw play but they were led by Haden Deaton and Matt Jennings rather than Trevor Lakes who had done most of the work in the Spring. Jennings has really been solid with his shooting touch coming back to him. That has spurred his aggressiveness and made him very hard to stop right now.
Haden Deaton has done really well as a scoring threat the last two weeks and if he had a knock on him it might have been that he doesn’t add a ton of offense. His three-point shooting has taken a big step forward in the last year and shot north of 30% in high school this season. Deaton is getting looks for his energy, motor, and now his shooting prowess.
Mateo Rivera Is As Consistent As They Come
In the class of 2017 nationally, the point guard class is weak. Even in just Indiana, there are not a ton of options. However, Mateo Rivera is one of them. The 6’0 guard out of North Central (IN) has been one of the more consistent players you will find in the state.
Mateo has a great pace to his game. He’s smooth but quick and always pushes the tempo just a little bit more than the defense would like. He’s already got an offer from Southern Indiana and they were on hand to watch him again on Thursday night in Saint Louis.
Rivera was really good for Indiana Elite Central 2017 as he showcase a solid jump shot and plenty of transition buckets. However, he a really good setup man. He enjoys passing and making plays for his teammates, doesn’t demand to shoot the ball every time down the floor. Rivera could get a few more looks this month from DII/DI programs.
Isiah James Stretching Game Out To The Wing
The development of bigs has really changed over the last decade. The ability to stretch out and play on the wing has become almost a necessity. This is true for all levels of players. Indianapolis Pike forward Isiah James is now taking that step and has really ramped up his game in July, showing off his addition to his skill set.
James, a 6’5 forward, has predominantly been known for his rebounding and interior game. He has always been able to face up but has done it within the mid-range. Now, he has taken it to every part of the court. James showed off that tonight as he played with the ball in his hands, bringing it up the floor in a fast break and making plays, both, for himself and for his teammates. He has also shown that he can shoot it a bit from distance. Not going to have a great percentage right now but form looks solid and as he puts more time in it could be a bonus to his game.
