The Hawks are an impressive and well balanced team with excellent overall size and good perimeter shooting. Here is a report of some of their key players, who are all part of the Class of 2019.
Dylan Caruso 6’8″ Mansfield: A long and lean post player who has good moves and a nice shooting touch around the basket. He does a good job of finishing in the paint with both hands. He can handle the ball and pass out of double teams well. As the tallest player on the team, he received his share of physical play from opposing teams and he handled it pretty well. The rough play should also be a signal for him to attack the weight room. As he gets stronger, he will become even more formidable because he is very skilled and versatile.
Broc Smith 6’3″ Republic: Saw him for the first time at the Mizzou Elite Camp in June and was impressed with his size and 3-point shooting. Once again, I was impressed because not only did he knock down 3-pointers, he also showed the ability to get buckets off the bounce. If defenders closed out to hard, he could get by with a one or two dribbles and pull up for the mid range jumper. At his size, he could also go inside and post up against a smaller defender.
Luke Vandersnick 6’4: Rogersville: A rugged combo forward with a versatile game, Vandersnick was comfortable just about anywhere on the floor. He is a strong post player who could score inside and play through contact. He also displayed the ability to handle the ball in the open court and knock down 3-pointers off the catch. His size and versatility provides match-up problems for opposing defenders.
Jake Branham 6’0″ Springfield Catholic: A very capable combo guard who was a good perimeter shooter and solid ball handler. He scored on mid-range jumpers off the dribble and extended out to 3-point range. Did a nice job passing the ball as well.
Charlie O’Reilly 6’1″ Springfield Catholic: An excellent marksmen who opens the court for his bigger teammates with his long-range shooting. He is an excellent shooter off the catch and he moves well without the basketball. He is a solid ball handler who knows how to play the game.
Trenton Smith 6’5″ Carl Junction: A blue-collar post player won played with great activity throughout the weekend. He was always in the middle of the action with his high energy, especially on the offensive and defensive boards. He was able to score in the post, but he also stepped out and knocked down 10-12 footers facing the basket off the catch.
Winston Quinn 6’1″ Glendale: A thin and lanky point guard who did a nice job defensively with his length on the perimeter. He likes to play with pace as he keeps the ball moving. Not afraid to slash to the basket and will hit the open jumper.
