Comets DLR
Hunter McCalla. Hunter is such an interesting player because he has a decent combo of size, frame, skill, and agility to play multiple spots. Type of guy that you can just plug in anyplace. Nice passer and handler at 6-foot-4. Becker High School.
Matt Carik. Was really good in transition in the championship game. His aggressive push led to a pair of his own baskets and his outlets up the floor were again high quality. Really nice open floor player. Big late game foul shots to put the game away which is always something to note. Rogers High School.
Zac Olson. Saw a bit of everything Olson can do in the championship game. Because he can shoot and his team is huge he plays the three and smaller players guard him. They have no chance to deal with him around the basket so he scores on the block or gets to the foul line a lot. Also made a baseline and elbow jumper. It’s what he does. Also quicker off his feet to collect boards than I had thought. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School.
Jake Skelly. Had a really good weekend. Tougher than I thought, plays with a lot more pace than he previously did. Confident with the ball and doesn’t get bothered when smaller ball pressure guys try to harass. Grand Rapids High School.
Tyler Kranz. Tyler is looking more and more like a face-up four man who can also mix it up. He’s hitting a face-up jumper from mid-range once or twice every game I watch. Stands 6-foot-5 and boards well too. Sauk-Rapids High School.
Brock Schrom. Brock is so much quicker off his feet than anybody expects. Gets to boards before others can react and at his size against most teams he’s collecting off the rim. Had numerous monster dunks over the weekend. Grand Rapids High School.
Heat Bui
Jake Larson. So slippery, nearly impossible to stay with unless you back a step off and have help or you are an elite ball pressure guy. Covers so much ground quickly with his crossover and not only is the move quick but so is his pull-up. A guy with way more juice than people know. Could have a really big senior year. Forest Lake High School.
Nick McMillan. Another kid that has handles, toughness, and shifty play to him. McMillan can get hot in a hurry and knock down three or four treys in a game but also, he’s stronger now and is able to get to the rim some and take contact to finish. Looks to have the skills to play both guard spots. Mounds View High School.
Griffin Gamble. Has a frame that can lay into bigger guys and get them off balance and then comes the other way and has range to his jumper so he can extend the defense. Smart player with a shot to note. Cretin-Derham Hall High School.
Jack Hanson. A 6-foot-5 fighter that I believe Maple Grove can use next year. He’s strong, smart, and can be used in that role as a rebounder, screener, low post defender. Definitely a guy the Crimson can use up front. Maple Grove High School.
Max McNellis. Max definitely had some moments this weekend that had us thinking that steps have really been taken. He was aggressive helping over in the middle as the last line of defense and we saw him complete a pair of And1s in games as well as make a few face-up jumpers. Another Crimson player that looks really to help their strong group of guards. Maple Grove High School.
Josh Steckler. Josh had one of the best shooting games he’s ever had. He made shots early with his feet set, attacked to mid-range and hit, attacked the rim and scored in transition, and brought defenders to him every time he had the ball. Had to of had 20-23 points and if he gives half of this to the Polars this winter they are in good shape. North St. Paul High School.
