Matt Cartwright. Why is Cartwright of SF O’Gorman the top 2017 South Dakota prospect with multiple NSIC offers? He let everybody know on Friday immediately with four three-point makes in the first half and 27 points on 10-15 shooting including five treys made. The combination of length, beautiful shooting touch, timing of release, and effort off the ball to get to space and release all rank with the best Midwest shooters we’ve seen in this class.
What was also impressive was how well Matt moved without the ball within the Attack sets to get into space cutting off screens, or after setting a screen, catching, and completing. Half of his shots were at the arc but the other half were off ball worker baskets which is very important because of this is something the 6-foot-5 shooting guard does consistently, it’s a way to produce baskets even when the touch is off.
JP Costello. Matt’s high school teammate that is known for his effort around the basket and today was no different. Cartwright didn’t have a big boarding total (five) but whenever a shot when up he was still a big part of his team’s defensive rebounding efforts. Costello makes one of the best box-out hits you will see and does an every better job of securing the man so he can collect or a teammate can. And when he does board the elbows are out, the base is strong, and the outlet is quick. Also had five field goals in front of the rim.
Christian Kyles. The Iowa point guard from Siouxland Christian was a pace controller against the Minnesota Heat. Nobody could keep Kyles in front while he controlled the other team’s guard with his defensive effort. More important was his decision making. Kyles had nearly a perfect game in deciding when to attack, when to hold up and make the defensive work, and when to swing. This combination led to his seven assists against one turnover plus he was excellent in grabbing six boards and then turning to start the break.
Devin Coughlin. We really like how Coughlin fits with this team. Does his job getting wide on the wing to spread the floor, does a very good job of making the right reads with quick passes, active off ball, and set good screens. Defended deep in a stance for his team consistently and he scored three times. An all around excellent game as a role player who did the job pairing with Kyles to keep getting Cartwright open with ball movement.
