He’s been hearing some light interest from a few mid-major programs of late, and his goal is to have a Division I offer by summer’s end.
“Mid-major schools have been showing interest, Loyola-Maryland and Lafayette (PA) have talked to my AAU coach about me. And Western Michigan has come to a couple games, and I think that’s about it,” said Neiuwkoop, who also mentioned Old Dominion had contacted him.
“I’m hoping that one of them offers, but I can’t say right now which one might be the next.”
He’d like to add to his current short list of offers during the July live periods, and have plenty of options to choose from before he makes a decision this fall.
“I’ll probably try and make a decision right before basketball season starts next season,” said Neiuwkoop. “So I can have a clear conscience for my senior season and have nothing to worry about except playing ball.”
He added: “It’s definitely important, I’ve got to figure out what’s best for my future and stuff like that. And what’s best for me.”
Currently a post, Neiuwkoop says his best skill is his passing ability, and says he’s working this summer to develop into more of a perimeter player.
“I feel like I’m one of the best passers in the state for a big guy. And post-wise, I’m working on that still. And then shooting – like mid-range and 3s,” he said.
“I hopefully see myself evolving into more of a small forward, but maybe a stretch-four too.”
This summer he’ll finish his 17U offseason with the West Michigan Lakers.
“July goals are I want to continue to win,” said Nieuwkoop. “And I want to talk to more colleges, and hopefully get a Division I scholarship.”
