Continue ReadingArizona has some very talented incoming freshman who are already receiving interest from schools at the next level. One of those players is 6’2″ Mesquite PG/SG Xavier Dussell.
Dussell has had some eye opening performances while playing in primarily 16U and 17U tournaments. Recently, in one of the most renowned in-state tournament, Dussell scored 15 straight points while playing at the 17U level. Although Dussell does not have the offers that a couple of his other freshman counterparts have, he has received some interest from a couple of schools.
Some the schools that have in someway demonstrated an interest in Dussell are “Fullerton, GCU, ASU, Irvine, NAU”. As stated earlier, he does not have any offers at this point. However, he has an abundance of potential and could end up being yet another top player in the nation out of Arizona.
One of the things that impresses me the most about Dussell is how fluid he is as a player. There are a lot of talented young individuals where it is quite clear that they have been taught the fundamentals, but that their bodies might never fully develop to the point where they are capable of utilizing all of the skills. Dussell is far from that. His athleticism, size, and length for a freshman are outstanding. It is tough to determine how much more a freshman will grow, but I think it is safe to assume that just by his measurements, he will continue to grow. As it currently stands, he is able to guard positions 1-4 in most situations.
In addition to having a lot of uncoachable traits, he is a confident shooter from almost any spot on the court. His ability to pull from deep extends the court greatly. He appears to be more comfortable shooting the basketball off the dribble as this allows him to take momentum steps and generates upward momentum as he brings the basketball up. With that said, he is a good catch and shoot player as well.
One area that he needs to work on in order to take his game to the next level is his willingness to be explosive out of triple threat and off of the dribble. He has some great intangibles that afford him the opportunity to get into the lane and finish whenever he wants. At times, he demonstrates his youth by settling for shots instead of using his physical gifts to put the defense in a tough position. He is a highly motivated player with a lot of great coaches in his circle – it will be interesting to see how this develops and he furthers his game to another level of elitism.
Although Dussell is far from making the tough decision in regards to what college he will attend, he recently decided to attend Mesquite High School next season. Based on summer ball and his talent, it is safe to assume that he will have an immediate impact for the program. “One thing that I can bring to the table is an endless drive to work hard.”
Dussell will continue to participate with Arizona United/Team Bayless in July. “Team Bayless is definitely making a name for itself… It has been incredible to play with such a great group of guys that I can learn from in order to improve my game and get a better understanding of how to be successful at a high level.”
Keep an eye out for this very talented underclassmen as he will make noise in this state and should end up having a tremendous basketball career in high school and at the next level.
