Continue ReadingDesert Vista High School has a number of top tier players on their roster, which, explains why a player of 6’6″ 2018 F Jaden Rollins caliber would even be considered for the JV team. At many schools, Rollins would not only have played Varsity as a Sophomore, but would have had a chance to start. With that said, Rollins has worked on his craft and improved to the point that there is no question that he will have a chance to play meaningful minutes on a talented Desert Vista team.
In addition to participating with Desert Vista, Rollins plays club basketball for the Arizona Power Factory. While playing with the Factory in the offseason, Rollins has had some tremendous games and caught the attention of many. With that said, he has not received his first offer yet. However, he has received interest from “Rice University and Northern Colorado.”
Baring some crazy unforseen situation or circumstances, Rollins seems like a sure candidate to play at the next level. He has good length and athleticism, finishes well around the rim, and has a solid work ethic. He rebounds the basketball well, plays tough defense, and has been working to improve his ball handling as well as his shooting. More important than his skills, Rollins has a “4.0 GPA”. There are a lot of universities and colleges who are in the market for a skilled, 6’6″ player who has great grades.
Moreover, Rollins does not seem to be the type of young man who has a huge ego that causes issues in the locker room. When asked about his goals for next year, he was quite humble as he merely wants to contribute to the success of the team. In addition, for the people who love tough defense, he mentioned that he wants to be the type of player that a coach puts in at the end of a game to get a stop and to secure a win. Every coach can appreciate a 6’6″ player who seeks to impact a game on the defensive end.
Desert Vista largely underperformed compared to what many expected of the group this past season. With that said, they have a new coach and a lot of talent coming back. Rollins expects that the team will be “really good and probably [have] a chance at state.” In order for Desert Vista to do that, Rollins will most likely play a large role.
Playing on at the JV level last season may have taken away some attention from next level suitors; however, I would highly encourage colleges to catch a Arizona Power Factory game this live period as he brings a lot to the table. In my estimation, he might be one of the biggest “diamonds in the rough” in the entire state as he still has yet to attract an offer.
