Continue ReadingAt 6-foot-3, Emanuel Hylton offers an intriguing blend of size and versatility along with solid leadership intangibles in the back court for St. John’s College High School. The strong combo guard is an effective defender who enjoys getting into the lane and facilitating for others or scoring in traffic around the rim. Hylton, who holds an offer from Hampton University, landed his second offer from the University of San Diego last week and his third from UMBC this week.
Other division 1 programs such as Robert Morris and Dayton have each contacted Hylton to inform him they’ll be watching him this summer. He’ll look to showcase his skills in the upcoming weeks with Team Belief on the Adidas Gauntlet. A variety of things Hylton does appeal to coaches at the next level.
“Schools like my ability to penetrate and get others involved” Hylton explained. “My size at the point guard and two. That I can play combo guard.”
Hylton is a down-hill type guard who can dime, penetrate, and get others involved. He can defend multiple positions as a result of his size, strength, IQ, and athleticism. His ability to bump and grind down low but also handle the ball at the 1 set him apart from other guards. One area Hylton is focusing on improving right now is becoming a more consistent perimeter shooter.
“Definitely working on my outside shot,” Hylton began. “My outside shot will open up my whole game. Make you close out, drive right past you, then dime. But definitely outside game.”
The D.C. native has fit in nicely in his role with the defending WCAC champion Cadets. Hylton has found a way to make an impact on both ends of the floor while learning how to play the right way.
“I think my IQ is high. I defend well. I move well,” he said. “The St. John’s system has gotten me to move and use other players to my advantage and get open.”
We mentioned earlier that Hampton was the first school to offer Hylton. He took a visit down to the campus at HU for their homecoming in the fall. Hylton stated that he will probably be taking some late visits after he gets a better idea of which schools he’d like to visit. Hylton is considering many factors when deciding which school he is considering attending.
“Relationship with the coach is important. How close I can be with the coach,” Hylton stated. “Location will play a part. How the system is. Whether they play fast or slow. If they play freshmen.”
No matter which school he chooses, Hylton will likely see early playing time given his two-way versatility in conjunction with his dynamic playmaking ability on both ends of the floor.
