“I like to think of myself as a versatile player. I’m 6’8 so I try to get inside and out,” Mitchell explained. “I try to work on my jump shot. When I get the bigger, slower defenders I can take ‘em off the dribble. But then I like to take advantage of the smaller guys.”
Mitchell was an integral factor for Prep during their run to the 2016 BSN Summer League Championship. In the final four contest vs. Bishop McNamara, Mitchell scored 20 points and helped neutralize rising sophomore big men Makhi and Makhel Mitchell in the low post. As he continues to develop his skill set, Mitchell believes he will be more equipped to match up with different types of bigs.
“I’m definitely working on my handle,” said Mitchell. “So when I do get the bigger defenders, I can become a better slasher and get to the rim.”
Another thing Mitchell does well is defend, especially in pick and rolls and at the rim. His length, quick reactions, and lateral quickness give him an advantage in those areas.
“I’ve been working on my on-ball defense,” Mitchell stated. “I think that lots of times when there’s screens and I have to show, I’ve been working on staying with guards and keeping in front of me. Definitely in help defense like to try to help and block shots.”
Mitchell is a hard-working student who sports an impressive 3.6 GPA while taking 3 AP classes at Prep.
“I try to challenge myself in the classroom also as well as on the court,” he said.
Princeton, Lehigh, Colgate, Army, and Navy have each expressed interest in Mitchell’s services. He took a recent visit to Princeton for their elite camp. A host of division 3 schools have also been in contact with Mitchell.
This July, Mitchell will be running on the grassroots circuit with Team Legacy, the team he’s been with since fourth grade. While he is yet to land his first scholarship offer, don’t be surprised to see him earn one soon.
