Continue ReadingRed Mountain High School (Mesa, AZ) always seems to be a competitive team that teams dislike seeing on their schedule. This next year should be no different despite the fact that they lost a good portion of their team to graduation. Although they might be young, they will have a Senior guard leader in 5’10 2017 Andres Mayberry.
Mayberry is a solid guard who is capable of scoring the basketball from anywhere. He is a solid shooter with an improving mid-range game and does a nice job of using freeze moves to finish at the rim. Mayberry was the leading scorer on the team last year and much more will be expected of him in order for the team to take the next step. As far as defense is concerned, Mayberry does a decent job of pressuring the basketball and keeping the ball in front. In addition, he is an above average defender in help side.
Mayberry has had a solid high school career; however, he is hoping to have a chance to play this game at the next level. As it currently stands, Mayberry has received interest from, “Nebraska-Wesleyan, Arizona Christian University, and Mesa-Benedictine.” With that said, he has not received any official offers.
During the live period, Mayberry will be participating with Arizona Power. The group features many talented prospects and should have a good couple of weekends prior to the live period ending. Mayberry’s hope is that “someone will take a chance on me” before the live period ends. In addition, he noted that he is working frequently on becoming a better defender, much due to the push of his high school coach, Todd Fazio.
As the club season winds down and Mayberry shifts his focus back to high school, he wants to be come more of a “true point guard” and “a leader to a young team.” He understands that even though he is a solid scoring guard, he needs to continue to improve his mid-range jumper and his defense in order to play this game at the next level. One of things that also impresses me about Mayberry is his attitude outside of basketball. He is always quick to thank his coaches and to mention the amount of respect he has for head coach Todd Fazio. Mayberry has a coachable mentality and is hungry to play this game at the next level – those are two things that are vital to being successful at this game.
If Mayberry continues to score the ball well, find his teammates after pulling the help side defense, and works on his defense, he should be a good fit at an NCAA Division-II or NAIA school.
