Continue ReadingMany young basketball players across the country have the dream of coming to the United States to play high school basketball and hopefully earn a scholarship to get an education at an American university. That was the hope for 5’11” Edriel Martinborough, however he quickly learned it isn’t as easy as coming over and jumping on the court.
Martinborough, who came to Virginia from the Bahamas in August of last year, was forced to sit out his junior season at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg after questions about his transcript. With everything finally cleared up, he’s spent the summer playing with Spectrum Sports out of Roanoke, and he has been turning heads with his athleticism in the open floor.
“I’m a little bouncy, and I have to give that to God because I’m from the Bahamas and we all can jump from the Bahamas,” Martinborough said. “So when you see me you see the speed and athleticism first along with my defense.”
The stocky and strong lead guard has blazing speed in the open floor, and defensively he’s able to run down defenders in transition for big blocks that provide energy for himself and his team. He’s a shifty ball handler with a lightning quick first step, and he’s able to elevate to finish at the rim with bigs or kick to find open shooters.
Edriel Martinborough is a quick and athletic playmaker at the PG spot. After missing an entire season of high school basketball, Martinborough is focused on getting ready to help his team take the next step, and he’s itching to get on the court at LCA.
“My goals are just to lead my team as the starting point guard, make plays for my team and hopefully earn a scholarship to a great school,” Martinborough said.
With him not playing last season and coming from a different country, Martinborough is still relatively unknown to collegiate coaches, however that should change as there aren’t many guard with his kind of explosion in the state. He understands it’s a process, but he isn’t picky about what schools recruit him.
“Anything that God has in place I will be lucky to attend, anything that’s a good school with a good foundation and good people.”
Be sure to keep an eye out for Martinborough and LCA this year, as he should make some big noise in the 434 this season.
