One of the younger players who impressed many last season was 2018 5’10” PG/SG Dominic Mooney Jr. Mooney averaged almost 10 points per game, over 3 assists per game, and over 3 rebounds per game. Moreover, Mooney also had a game where he was able to dish out 10 assists.
As far as club basketball is concerned, Mooney has been participating with Powerhouse Tucson. Mooney has been a standout player for the team. As of recent, the team was able to finish 3-1 with their only lose coming to Earl Watson Elite 15U. Mooney was one of the top players for the team and was monumental to the squads success.
In regards to college opportunities, Mooney has not received any interest or offers. Like many talented guards, Mooney has yet to find that right fit. However, based on his skill set, I would not be surprised to see some schools starting to look his way.
One thing that hurt Mooney last season was his shooting percentages. Both his FG and 3FG percentage are lower than where most schools would want them. With that said, he was only a Sophomore and comfort as well as work can and will improve those percentages. In the games that I have observed this summer, he has shot the ball at a higher rate and should be poised to raise those numbers come the high school season.
He has been working hard with the hope of “earning a scholarship and becoming a better point guard.” He was willing to admit that one of the biggest things he has been working on this summer is “making better decisions” on the court. With that said, he brings a lot to the table. He plays with a lot of aggressiveness and heart. He harasses point guards and does a good job of competing for the 50/50 balls. In addition, he does a nice job of getting from “Point A” to “Point B” with the basketball. As his ability to finish improves and some of his decisions improve, he shot be a premier scorer in the state.
In addition, it is worth noting that his coaches give him high praise. Coach Nelson of Powerhouse remarked, “Dominic is a dominant lefty who can get to the rim at will as well knock down the three ball with deep range. He has a east cost swagger to his game, which means he plays defense also…. He has great vision and will sacrifice his self for the team.”
At this point, lower level schools, should have him on their radars as he has a lot of potential. He is a talented prospect who plays with a lot of confidence.
