With that said, many of the Arizona boys held their own as they competed at an extremely high level. Multiple Arizona boys were selected to play in the All-Star games that are associated with the event.
Camper of the Week:
Timmy Allen 6’5″ 2018 Desert Ridge SF/PF – Allen is easily one of my favorite players to watch in the entire state. I saw him as a freshman playing against older Arizona Club teams and believed at that point that he would be an issue. He has turned into just that for Arizona teams. His well-balanced play has made him a headache for many. He has expanded his game and is shooting the basketball better from beyond the 3 point line while still driving well and being able to post players up. In addition, he has demonstrated a strong ability to guard true small forwards and most shooting guards. He is capable of guarding 4’s and most 5’s; however, many have wondered about his ability to guard smaller, quicker guards. He has certainly improved in this area while gaining more explosiveness himself.
Best of the Best:
Lunden Taylor 6’2″ 2018 PG (Team Bayless) – Taylor is a California player, but playing with the Arizona based Team Bayless. Taylor has really impressed me in recent weeks due to his high basketball IQ and strength. He is an above average shooter who gets into the paint at will. He uses his body as well as anybody as a means of getting by his defender. He finishes strong at the rim, but also does a great job of finding the open teammate. His help side defense is decent, but he is definitely much better on the basketball. Taylor was able to make it into the top 20 game of the All-West Camp due to his efforts.
Jaden Lee 6’2″ 2018 Mesquite PG/SG – Lee had a monster weekend and started it out with a strong showing at the All-West Camp. Good strength, improving jump shot, and capable of being a top notch defender. Lee earned his way into the top 40 game. Lee has some elite level athleticism and used it to get into the lane. In addition, he demonstrated his high raising abilities on multiple games with some impressive dunks.
Wesley Harris 6’6″ 2018 Desert Vista SF – Harris demonstrated great athleticism and toughness all week. In order to maximize his game, he will need to continue to be comfortable shooting the basketball from beyond the three point line. He has many next level tools and if he is able to extend the court, he would be able to utilize his athleticism and skillset at an even higher level.
Tre Mitchell 6’1″ 2017 La Joya PG – Mitchell’s length and skillset at the point guard spot make him a definite next level player. He needs to put on some muscle, but his high basketball IQ and change of pace greatly assist in his success at this event. His length is a huge assist on the defensive end as well as he gets his hands on a lot of passes and harass guards.
Za-Ontay Boothman 5’11” 2020 Buckeye PG/SG – Boothman’s confidence showed greatly. His ability to stop on a dime and shoot the basketball from anywhere is as good as he any freshman. He is a top tier scorer for his age group and he was able to demonstrate that against older competition this week at the All-West Camp.
Honorable Mentions:
Deven Breckner 5’7″ 2018 Deer Valley PG/SG – Don’t let his size fool you, Breckner can flat out play. He has been getting more and more attention this off-season. He could compete for the top handle in the state, he is a knock down shooter, and a solid playmaker who does a great job of driving the gaps and finding others. This was just another opportunity for Breckner to show what he can do and he “hit it out of the park”.
Xavier Dussell 6’1″ 2020 Mesquite PG/SG – Dussell continued to shoot the basketball well at camp which led into him having a successful weekend shooting the basketball as well. Dussell is a long and athletic player who has demonstrated an ability to score the basketball from an array of spots against older competition. If the state has not taken notice yet, this camp and this weekends tournament should have put him on the map.
David Exline 6’3″ 2018 Mesquite SG/SF – With his physical stature, many walk into the gym and expect Exline to have a bruiser playing style. For the most part, they would be right. It is very difficult to keep Exline in front because he is a strong young man with a good first step. Add to it, that he has improved his ability to shoot the basketball. In fact, this improvement was on display this weekend. If he continues to shoot the basketball at this rate, he could cause a lot of problems for teams as it will spread the court and open up driving lanes for himself and his teammates.
Trentez Scales 5’5″ 2020 Ironwood PG – Scales is a tough defender with a lot of speed. He sporadically showed that he is a capable shooter and playmaker. He did a nice job playing against higher and often times older competition. As he continues to mature, I can see him being one of the top players in the 2020 class after his performance this week at the All-West Camp.
