The team performed well as a collective unit; however, no one was more of a presence than 6’6″ 2016 Geoff Hibbitt Ironwood. Geoff had a double double in both games and demonstrated a strong ability to play in pick and roll situations and on the block. His play towards the end of the summer with Ironwood has transferred to AZU and he has been a force all weekend. His jump shot needs to improve in speed and consistency, but he is capable of squaring up and attacking while also having tremendous footwork on the block.
Honorable Mentions:
Cody Carmichael PG 2017 5’9″ Ironwood – Carmichael struggled early but hit two clutch threes in the second half of the first game to help seal the deal. He does so many little things to impact the game that even when he is having an off shooting game, he has a huge impact. He finished the first game with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Dominique Gonzales PG/SG 2020 6’1″ Ironwood – Gonzales has provided the team with a much needed shooting that. Although there are plenty of capable shooters on the roster, most of them surprised early except for Gonzales. In the two games, he is 5-8 from beyond the arc with 4 coming in one game. This freshman has played with the big boys and played with a lot of poise.
Terrence Hunter SG 2018 6’2″ Mountain Pointe – Hunter has a solid all around game. His vision coming off of pick and rolls could improve, but he flat out works. He is always in good help side position, plays solid on ball defense, and is all over the glass for a guard. He has a smooth mid range jumper and shoots it from deep confidently.
Scott Shaver SG 2017 6’2″ Greenway – Shaver is one of the best shooters in the state. However, he has had a hard time connecting from deep in this tournament. With that said, he hasn’t let it impact his game. He has played tough on ball defense, gets back on transition defense and does a nice job of stopping the ball, and competes on the glass. His efforts were key to the success of AZU.
