Amidst some tough and competitive games, the talented prospects on this team were able to pull it together and win their pool and advance out of the first round of bracket play. The team, which featured players from multiple high school programs, did a nice job of making some noise on a national scale.
Team MVP:
Joshuwan Johnson 5’9″ PG/SG 2018 Maricopa – Johnson is not new to the spotlight. In fact, on a much improved Maricopa team last season, Johnson was able to average almost 20 points per game as a Sophomore. As a Junior, the team moves up in divisions and will play in a region that features the early state championship favorite, Apollo, and last year’s state runner up for Division 1, Sunnyslope. Johnson is a playmaker who has the ball in his hands the majority of the possessions. He is a capable shooter, but does it better off the dribble than off of the catch. Moreover, he has a strong first step and explodes well vertically despite his height. His live ball moves demonstrated a nice change of pace and direction while blowing by the initial defender and forcing help side to rotate. His ability to create was huge for Team Zona. I would not be surprised to see him continue to put up big numbers despite the move to a more competitive region and division.
Honorable Mention:
Grant Greabell 6’1′ PG/SG 2018 Estrella Foothills – Greabell is undoubtedly one of the best shooters in the state and the best shooter on Team Zona. He is a strong shooter off the catch and off of the dribble. Against Chuck Hayes Basketball, he hit a huge three off of a pump fake and a side dribble. He hit two other threes in that game that were essential to the teams success. He is an above average defender on the basketball who has a nice basketball IQ that assists him in being in good help side position. On the offensive end, he demonstrates good shot selection and an ability to hit from anywhere on the court. His ability to stretch the defense is huge, especially when playing next to athletic guards who are capable of breaking down the first defender.
