Williams finished as the team’s leading scorer with 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game as a sophomore. The 6’6″, 178-pounder said he used the mindset of putting the team on his back and will do so again this season.
Here’s how he breaks down his own game.
“My best attributes as a player is my energy and hustle. I run the floor and take shots. I’m supposed to take the shots my team needs. I’m a player that wants the ball in my hands when there is a close game and when we need that extra bucket. I’m looking forward to getting better at my ball handling and 3-point shot percentage. I want to show more of my versatility by playing in the post, handling the ball and my outside shot.
Williams plays AAU ball for coach John Arroyo and The Skills Center Elite. He says that coach Arroyo is the best coach that he’s ever had.
“He’s [Arroyo] more like a father figure to me. Not only does he want us to be the best, but he fights for us when nobody else is fighting for us. When we make little mistakes, he’s there to give us constructive criticism from some of the things he would’ve done. When I first came to SCE I had no lick of talent, coach Arroyo and my teammates are the ones who made me who I am today.”
Williams says when he first arrived at SCE that he was a little scared because all of his experiences to that point came off the bench.
“Now that I’ve made it in the starting lineup I realized that I have to step up and help the team alongside with my other four teammates who start with me as well. It gave me a lot of responsibility to be able to handle and make all the right moves for my team.”
Right now, Williams has interest from Division-II Lees-McRae College in North Carolina. He says he talks with their coach Steve Hardin frequently. Expect more colleges to take a look at Williams, the kid is lengthy, crafty and like I mentioned before not afraid to put his body on the line. He’s one of my favorite under the radar rising juniors.
