Not only did Battle gain a very good basketball coach, but the program also gained an excellent player in Trae Meny, who is one of the most talented shooters in the Class of 2018. He happens to be the son of the new head coach.
The 6’5″ Meny is a long and lean wing player who can really put the ball in the basket from long distance. In one game last February, Meny scored 35 points and made a school-record eight pointers in a victory over South Shelby. He made 60 3-pointers last season while averaging a team-high 17 points a game to lead Palmyra.
Despite his lanky frame, Meny is stronger than one might believe. His 6’5″ size enables him to use his advantage inside against smaller defenders. He also gets a lot of his toughness from playing quarterback in football. As a sophomore, he was the signal-caller for a Palmyra team that advanced to the Class 2 state semifinals.
“Playing football makes me a little stronger,” Meny said. “It helps me when I have to bang down low against bigger guys when I need to. My height helps me when I have to go inside against smaller defenders. I am able to take them down low.”
Meny has been playing with the Missouri Hustle 16U team during the summer. He is the leading scorer on a team full of excellent guards and wing players. With some very talented teammates such as guards Jamonta Black and Trent Lyles who can handle the ball and penetrate, Meny does an excellent job of moving without the ball and finding the open spots to make open 3-pointers.
“It’s been a lot of fun playing with the Hustle,” Meny said. “We get to play against a lot of good competition and everyone is bigger and quicker. It makes us have to play a little faster.”
