Continue ReadingThe second offer from Minnesota to a 2018 talent went to Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Race Thompson. The Gophers extended the 6-foot-8 combo forward over the winter and Thompson quickly jumped on the radar as one of the next top prospects in the state.
Thompson collected that offer after shooting 60 plus percent from the field as a sophomore against Northwest Suburban level competition. Thompson gave the Falcons team leading 14.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks a game.
Race has taken things further in pushing the D1 Minnesota 16 and Under team to a national ranking of second in the nation through April and May.
“The spring went really good for my team,” Race said. “We won most our games and should have won all of them. It has helped me improve because all my coaches know how much potential I have and they push to be the best player I can be. Also, the competition level was really high.”
We’ve seen Race push the ball and play on the wing with Armstrong this past winter, we’ve seen him play inside in both high school and Grassroots basketball, and we’ve seen him play lead guard in the past. Thompson can do pretty much what he is asked to and this spring he has been doing a lot of things around the basket.
When we asked Race about what he wants to improve going forward he mentioned “get my ball handling better and improve my perimeter shooting”.
Right now he has scholarship offers from Minnesota, Northern Iowa, and North Dakota and more are likely on the way.
“I’ve heard from Michigan, Iowa State , Marquette, Virginia , DePaul, Wisconsin that’s all I can think of off the top of my head,” Thompson told us about recruiting.
Minnesota is also a team that is following Thompson of course. “I like (Minnesota) a lot and all the coaches are nice,” said Thompson. “I haven’t talk to them recently.”
Thompson and his high school teammates were at Northern Iowa team camp last weekend and Race is happy with how they competed.
“We played good last weekend and I think we are going to be good next winter,” Thompson said.
Race returns along with point guard Isaiah Rollins, guard Isaiah Poster, and wing Gabe Hostetler.
