Nate led an undersized team to nine wins this winter including wins over Fargo Davies and Fargo North that were considered upsets as well as strong victories. Rodriguez averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and three assists per game hitting 43 percent of his attempts, 72 percent of his foul shots, and a third of his treys.
With the top Hi-Liner talents (Rodriguez, Hunter Burchill, Levi Nix) all coming back expectations are higher for 2016-17 and Valley City has off-season plans.
“We have a couple camps as a team that we go to and then Sunday nights there are open gyms at the HAC for anyone who wants to go,” said Rodriguez about his summer basketball plans.
“I struggled to find my shot this past season. Hopefully I can work on that and get better and improve on that. I drove and attacked the basket pretty good this past season and found my teammates when teams collapsed on me.
“I have a knack for being in the right places and can anticipate things pretty well which allows me to get steals.”
Nate is also a football standout so he is putting a lot of off-season work into the gridiron as well.
“Most of the schools I’ve been talked to is for football,” Nate told PHD. “Valley City State, Jamestown, Bemidji State, Minot State, Concordia-Moorhead, Minnesota State-Moorhead are the schools in contact.
“I’m not really sure what I want to study, I’ve thought about teaching to physical therapy athletic training. Still undecided right now.”
As one of the state’s top two-sport standouts Nate plans to put in the work and simply get better each day.
“My goals for rest of summer would be to just get better overall in all my sports. Stay consistent in the weight room and have fun with everything I’m doing.”
