Continue ReadingMichael Speight, a 6-foot-3 rising senior guard for Wise High School, is considered one of the more well-rounded prospects in 2017 across the DMV region. The strong guard is a gifted scorer who has the ability to create for himself and get others involved as well. The Suitland, Maryland native should see his recruitment continue its upward trend during the July live period.
Speight recalls playing basketball for the first time about 5 years ago. The hard-working young guard impacts the game in a number of areas on both ends of the court. He’s a team-oriented player who can fill any role to help his team win.
“I can shoot it. I get my teammates involved. I can put the ball on the floor,” Speight stated. “Whatever the coach wants me to do, I can do it.”
His shooting and playmaking ability are very appealing. If he wants to be more of a pure point at the next level, Speight will need to continue to improve his ball-handling. Shooting off the dribble, and getting stronger are two other areas he says he’s really focusing on. While playing on the Under Armour Circuit with DC Blue Devils, Speight has faced some elite shot blockers. One of the most overlooked qualities he possesses is his paint getting ability.
“I can finish with the bigs. We play on the circuit so there are a lot of bigs,” Speight explained. “Finishing in traffic is an underrated part of my game.”
Xavier, Southern Cal, James Madison, Towson, and Sam Houston State have offered the combo guard, who sports a solid 3.0 GPA. Speight picked up a recent offer from Mount St. Mary’s during an unofficial visit. He plans to visit Old Dominion later this month. The Monarchs could potentially be the next program to dish out his next scholarship offer.
“Schools like how I shoot coming off screens,” Speight stated. “They want me to work my his ball handling cause I’m 6’2”, 6’3” so I’m probably gonna be a point guard. But as far as shooting and getting teammates involved, they really like that.”
Given his size, strength, athleticism, skill set, current level of production, along with the potential he projects moving forward, Speight should be considered a legitimate division 1 prospect. More programs are likely to get involved with his recruitment come July.
