Continue ReadingThe class of 2017 has a lot of depth but point guard is the one spot where the depth isn’t as prevelant. Things are starting to move forward though and one of those players making the charge is Mt. Vernon (Fortville) guard Michael Ertel.
The 6’0 lead guard is among the better options at the point in the class and he’s had a big year to this point with Indiana Elite on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit. With guys like Justin Thomas and Desmond Bane on the roster, Ertel was still able to average 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Now, Bane and Thomas are gone and he will be the key piece at guard for this team in July and ready to step up.
“I thought I have been doing a good job,” Michael said of his spring so far. “I’ve just tried to play as hard as I can and good things happen.”
His recruitment has seen a bit of an uptick this spring as a couple new schools have entered the fray. Ball State, Loyola (MD), Lafayette, Army, and Evansville are now tracking Ertel and developing those relationships early.
“They like how I can handle the ball and run a team while also being able to shoot it well,” Ertel said of his feedback. “I’m trying to improve my whole game. Mostly setting others up, strength, and athleticism.”
Michael said that “nobody has really stood out yet” in the group of his new teams but he likes them, enough that he is looking at taking some visits this month.
“In June I’m going to Ball State and we are still trying to set dates for visits to Lafayette, Loyola (MD), and Army in June as well,” Michael said.
The next two months could be big for a lot of prospects but Ertel could be in line to have a really nice summer with visits getting setup and him taking over the leadership of the Indiana Elite team.
