The Jags ran into eventual state champion Four Winds-Minnewaukan in the first round losing but two scores but they did win their next two games earning the consolation championship.
That gave Northern Cass 20 wins for the season and an impressive run overall. As fun as it was Nelson wanted more. As a basketball die hard the 6-foot-2 Nelson then tried out for ECI and made their top team
“I love the game of basketball and am very grateful to be playing for ECI,” Nelson told PHD. “During tryouts, I had to come late due to state basketball. I was playing in the state tournament and had to try my best to make it back in time to try out.
“I tried out for about a half hour and I am very grateful that coach Moormann and the rest of the staff believed in me and gave me a chance to make one of the teams even though I wasn’t at the full tryout. My teammates are a great group of guys that I love to hang out with.”
Nelson and ECI won half of their 20 spring games including the ECI Spring Preview and this was especially impressive considering that they had a rough start to the year in the Comets Shootout and NY2LA Spring Extravaganaza. Things are going very well now though.
“I thought my spring of AAU was very exciting and I got to play with and meet a lot of talented players,” Nelson said. “Coach Moormann pushes everybody to be the best they can be every game.
“The first couple tournaments we struggled because we didn’t know how to play with each other as well as we do now. But step by step we have gotten to be a way better team.
“The one major thing I need to focus on getting better at moving forward is defense. I cannot afford to take plays off on defense and fall asleep. I need to bring my intensity every possession.
“The one thing I feel like I’ve improved is my confidence. Coming into the first couple tournaments I was not as confident as some of the other players but by playing more and more I am more confident. That’s a really big help when it comes to helping your team.
Nelson has the skill and competitive fire to play college basketball and there are five programs following him close.
“In basketball I have heard from Lake Region State, Jamestown, University of Chicago, and Northland,” Logan said. “I have not yet decided where I want to go or what I want to major in yet. Also Augustana sent me an email but that’s it from them.”
Lake Region State and Jamestown are local, U of Chicago is a high academic school that also has a nice D3 basketball team, Northland is a northern Wisconsin school that competes in the UMAC D3 league, and Augustana is of course the defending D2 champions.
