The 6’1″ Barton is an excellent 3-point shooter who is gradually developing into a fine all-around scorer. He says his confident shooting stroke comes from many hours in the gym working on his game.
“It comes from getting in the gym and putting up lots of shots and just trusting myself,” Barton said. “I try to work on everything. I try to make 100 3-pointers, 100 pull-up jumpers and 100 free throws every day.”
The work that Barton puts in is paying off as he has developed into one of the top scoring threats in Southeast Missouri. As a sophomore, he averaged 17 points a game to lead a young Doniphan team to a 14-12 record. Barton returns along with several of his teammates to form a strong nucleus for 2017.
“We’re going to be pretty good next season,” Barton said. “We have a chance to win our conference and hopefully win a district championship.”
Barton is spending the summer playing with the SEMO Bulls 16U team. He enjoyed an excellent spring shooting the ball as one of the team’s leading scorers. Barton came up big in April when the Bulls won a big NY2LA Tournament in Dallas, TX. He put up a couple of 20-point performances in helping the Bulls bring home a first-place trophy. Barton hopes that his continued good play will lead to some collegiate recruiting interest by the end of the summer.
Barton has proven to be a dangerous catch-and-shoot threat from beyond the 3-point line. He moves well off screens and can really shoot the transition 3-pointer well. During the grassroots circuit, Barton has displayed the ability create jump shots off the bounce and get to the basket off the dribble.
“When I get in the gym, I work on all kinds of shots,” he said. “My percentage with the catch-and-shoot is good. My shooting percentage off the dribble is lower, but it’s getting better.”
