Continue ReadingJake Kuhn, a class of 2017 wing running on the AAU circuit with the 17U District Basketball Club squad, has been a standout performer this spring. His ability to affect the game in a number of ways has been an integral piece to his team’s success. The 6-foot-6 rising senior from St. Maria Goretti High School has a high IQ, and prides himself on giving maximum effort each time he hits the court.
A high energy wing who rebounds well out of position, Kuhn also has the ability to hit an open shot when it comes to him in the flow of the offense. One of the most underrated aspects of his game, however, is his athletic ability.
“I play my butt off. I’m a good rhythm player who plays within the system. I think I’m a little deceptively athletic sometimes,” he explained. “People kinda judge me as a shooter, but I can do a little bit more than that. I kind of get characterized as an un-athletic kid that’s tall and lanky, but I think I’m a little deceptive in that way.”
Since the season ended, Kuhn has worked tirelessly to perfect his jump shot. While he’s already considered an efficient perimeter shooter, one of his biggest priorities is becoming absolutely automatic from long range.
“Since the season ended, it’s come a long way,” Jake said about his jump shot. “Becoming a knockdown shooter. I was a pretty good shooter, but I think that’s the next level. Being able to come off screens and really hit an open jump shot every time it comes to me. I think that once I get there, doors will start to really open for me.”
In the classroom, Jake sports a fantastic 3.97 GPA. St. Francis, Air Force, Mount St. Mary’s, NJIT, and most recently New Hampshire have offered him scholarships. This past Saturday, he attended elite camp at Princeton. He also took unofficial visits to Maine and New Hampshire this past Thursday and Friday. Wofford, Penn, UMBC, Holy Cross, and Campbell are among the other schools to express interest. Delaware and Navy are the two newest schools who have become involved in Kuhn’s recruitment. Within the past 12 months, his biggest improvement as a player has probably been understanding how to handle high level physicality.
“I’ve been playing a lot of high level competition this past year,” Kuhn stated. “Last year, I would get knocked off the ball and stuff. This year I have a better understanding of picking my spots. When to attack, handling contact and finishing through.”
Jake will take an unofficial visit to UMBC on June 13. He’s also planning to attend elite camps at Penn (June 18), Columbia (June 23), and James Madison (June 30). One of his main personal goals for July is to land an offer from an Atlantic-10 program.
Given his blend of size and skill along with his versatility and consistent motor, Kuhn should slot in nicely as a shooting guard or small forward at the next level. After the July live period, he plans to take a few weeks off in August and then plan some official visits. Look for him to sign this November during the early signing period.
