Donovann Toatley has solidified himself as one of the better point guard prospects in Virginia’s 2018 class. The Maryland native will transfer schools this year and has recently heard from a handful of schools as his recruitment is beginning to heat up.
Playing with DC Premier on the grassroots scene, interest has began to pick up for the rising junior. “Cincinnati, Colgate, American, and Penn have all reached out since June 15th. I’m excited about the increased interest and look forward to playing well enough for more schools to reach out” stated Toatley.
He holds an offer from the University of Richmond, which he received at their elite camp a year ago.
The quick, shifty point guard does a great job of getting paint touches, can shoot the three and has a nice pull up game. He’s shown the ability to create shots for others and run a team.
“I think my playmaking ability off the bounce, on ball defense and my competitiveness are some of the strengths in my game. I play with a chip on my shoulder and have a will to win,” Toatley explained.
While experiencing early success, Toatley is still looking to improve, stating “ I need to continue to make better decisions with the ball and limit my turnovers. That’s part of being a good point guard.”
Last year, Toatley made a name for himself, garnering Second Team All-State honors at St. Stephen’s St. Agnes. This season, he will make the move to BIshop O’Connell High School in Arlington.
“I’m looking forward to the new environment, playing for a new coach, and most importantly playing against top level competition,” elaborated Toatley on the move.
There is no doubt Toatley is a playmaker and a shot maker. His competitive edge as a smaller guard works to his advantage. If he can continue to play with that chip on his shoulder and lead his team from the point guard position he should enjoy a good deal of success at his new home.
