Last September Central Michigan offered the 2018 prospect, and he’s been hearing from several mid to high-major Division I programs since.
“Oakland has been talking to me a lot, I’m pretty close with coach Drew Valentine. And I’ve actually been talking to Notre Dame a lot too. And I would say Michigan and Oakland have been the school’s most in contact with me. And actually Iowa has also been talking to me; they had a coach come watch me workout last year,” said Kolp.
The injury, a dislocated knee, was sustained in May during an open gym. Kolp will be out until at least November, but knows he has a lot of time to get back on the floor and prove himself.
“I definitely want to play college basketball, it’s what I want to do. I know this was a big summer for me, but everything happens for a reason. And I’m sure next year — my junior year, and my 17U summer — will be great. So I’m just going to keep working hard,” said Kolp.
“Hopefully I’ll be back before the start of my junior season. I don’t know for sure if I will be back by then, but if I’m not, I won’t miss much. But hopefully I’m back by November, and December at the latest.”
Michigan’s 6th-ranked 2018, Kolp says his court awareness and basketball savvy is his best strength.
“The strongest part of my game is probably my basketball IQ, reading the floor and passing. I need to work on my offensive game the most, but I’m best at getting my teammates involved — that’s my main thing.”
In the meantime, the junior-to-be is working hard to rehab his knee, and staying as fit as he can during the process.
“I go to physical therapy five times a week, for roughly an hour,” said Kolp. “After I do physical therapy Monday, Wednesday and Friday I do an upper body workout with my trainer.”
