Heading into the season, the staff at PrepHoops Arizona was able to see Van Dyke step up and add a different element to Westview that they have been missing the past couple seasons.
Van Dyke’s said on his goals for the season , “first of all, I want to help my team any way I can. I’m new to Westview and I want to earn my teammates respect, and the best way I can do that is to do what Coach McEvoy asks of me to the best of my ability. I’d like to help this team win a region championship and make the state playoffs. And hopefully, by playing well and playing hard, I hope to put myself in a position where I can play basketball beyond high school.
When asked about what he needs to work on, he says,”I need to be better about playing with only positive emotion. When things aren’t going my way, I need to stay even keel because in the long run, if I play hard, things will go my way. On the court, I’m going to continue to develop my ball-handling skills. That’s something every player can improve on and I want to play the 3 in college, so I want coaches to know I can handle the ball in tight spots and create my own shot.”
He says on his outlook this season is,”Westview is a hardworking program. The players have a strong understanding of their roles. We have some nice pieces and I’m looking forward to playing with them. We have some good depth and a very strong point guard in D’Maurian Williams. I think once we put the pieces together that we can be a dangerous playoff team.”
He hasn’t heard much from schools except, “UTEP and Queens University of Charlotte.”
His dad played at UTEP. He has the most career blocks in school history and they retired his jersey.
Van Dyke is looking for a solid group of people on the team that he can mesh with and he wants to study marine biology at the college level. He isn’t concerned at what level just wants the right fit.
