Sipes came off the bench to play 9-10 minutes a contest where he scored 4.1 points per contest on 44 percent shooting from the field and 72 percent shooting from the foul line.
“I think one of the coolest moments we had as a team was being undefeated in the WDA for the first time in school history,” Sipes explained. “That was pretty special.
“Individually, as a sophomore, it was gratifying in itself to be in the rotation with such a talented group of guys. I learned a lot from them, and it was an honor being able contribute in the record-setting regular season we had.”
The Patriots graduate seven guys from last year’s rotation so Sipes steps into a big role this winter along with returning big Lucas Meyer. They should receive support from senior-to-be Nate Symens and juniors Kade Lynch and Kade Amundson amongst others.
“Things are looking good,” Josh explained about the 16-17 season. “We lost seven seniors from last year, but we have guys working hard that are willing to step up and take some of those roles. One overall thing our team needs to improve in is our physical strength. Lifting over this summer will be key for next year.”
The 6-foot-3 Sipes is competing with the ECI Prospects who have had an excellent season so far winning 13 of 20 games. Right now they are right in the middle of the SPTS race and hoping to improve on their seven seed for the year end tournament with some wins in the July event.
“Spring AAU basketball has been going well for me,” Josh told PHD. “Our team has been solid the whole year, and has gone deep into some tough tournaments. Personally, I feel like I have grown as a player, and playing against some of the best competition in the country has really help my skill set develop.
“I think the two most important areas I would like to focus on is ball handling, and finishing with my left hand. I’m planning on improving my overall strength as well.”
Sipes is one of the most skilled and athletic talents in North Dakota’s 2018 overall and will have a nice future in whatever he chooses to do.
“I’m still kind of deciding on what career I want to go into in college,” said Sipes. “I have a few ideas but I haven’t settled on anything yet. But I do plan on playing college sports.”
