Yahuza Rasas 6’6″ St. Mary’s (2018): Displayed some dominant moments in the lane in leading St. Mary’s to the tournament championship. He did an excellent job of getting deep post position and his teammates did a good job getting him the ball early and often; and he delivered. He finished around the bucket on a consistent basis with with drop steps and turnaround jumpers. As usual, his rebounding and shot blocking were very good.
Gaven Pinkley 6’7″ Hillsboro (2018): Very skilled big man who displayed a lot of offensive tools. What I was impressed with was his ability to finish with his left hand. On several occasions, he scored on dribble drives from the high post to finish with the left. Despite being the obvious best player on his team, he played an unselfish game. Looks to make teammates better while still getting his buckets.
Yuri Collins 5’10” St. Mary’s (2019): Collins is known for his excellent passing ability, but he displayed some fine offensive chops in the Dragons’ victory over Parkway South in the semifinals. He attacked the basket early in the game and converted a number of easy layups. He also got the ball in transition and got buckets on the break. When the game slowed down, he went back to his role as a prime facilitator.
Darrian McBride 6’4″ Hazelwood East (2018): A physically built combo forward who was very aggressive taking the ball to the basket. Used his size and strength to play through contact and get buckets. He was a match-up problem with his ability to post up smaller defenders and take bigger ones off the dribble.
A.J. Somer 6’4″ Parkway South (2018): A very competitive combo forward who makes an offensive impact at several areas of the court. He has enough size to score around the basket on post ups and hard cuts to the bucket. He can also knock down mid-range jumpers and will also hit a 3-pointer off the catch. He plays in constant motion. He’s much stronger physically with an added 15 pounds.
Miles Jones 6’3″ St. Mary’s (2018): Smooth wing forward who had some very good moments during Sunday’s bracket play. He has a versatile skill set with excellent size on the wing. He handles the ball well and can get to the basket. He was very good in transition with several buckets coming off opposing team’s turnovers.
Jack Mullen 6’5″ Parkway South (2018): Solid post player who has continued to improve and bring more productivity. He is physically stronger and is able to bang around a little more in the low post. He showed the ability to finish around the basket. He is not fancy about it, but it is very effective.
