Da’Monte Williams (Peoria Manual)
The Illini 6’3” combo guard commit is a powerful and athletic slasher to the hoop off the bounce in the half court. Gets to the rack on a consistent basis. Works well in the pick and roll making sound decisions with the ball either passing or turning the corner and attacking. Jump shot is solid from mid-range pulling up and can stretch out to three on occasion. Improving as a passer. Williams is one of the top two prospects in the state’s 2017 class.
Nojel Eastern (Evanston)
The 6’6” point guard handles the ball making great decisions. Eastern passes it well showing feel and touch on his dishes. Finds his shooters and works well in the pick and roll game. Pushes the pace in transition and makes quality decisions. His athleticism showed improvement as he is fully healthy now and uses his explosion to get to the hoop where he makes plays for himself and others. Eastern can get on the offensive glass for tough boards that he turns into points.
Alonzo Verge (Proviso West)
His ability to put points up in a hurry makes Verge intriguing. He takes the ball to the cup with slick ball handling and floaters. Jumper is inconsistent at times although he can hit one every now and then. Late in the spring he improved his ability to cut down on the turnovers and flashiness. This is the key for him. Mid-major plus recruit.
Jacob Keller (Fenwick)
The lefty combo guard is making the full transition to playing on the ball and has shown he is more than capable of it. Keller is a slick ball handler that gets anywhere he wants on the floor using hesitation and a tight handle. He works well in the pick and roll. Really understands the offense and directs his teammates. Plays with a swagger and confidence that transfers over to his teammates. Distributes well in the half court finding his shooters when getting penetration in the lane. Sound decision maker that reads the defense and makes quality dishes. Doesn’t shoot it a ton, but has improved his three point stroke. If he can get this down consistently he is going to be special. Defensively really competes with his length and lateral quickness. Tough guard that will fight through a screen and gets his hands on steals. Solid mid-major prospect.
Teyvion Kirk (Joliet West)
Kirk has elevated his stock significantly in the last 6 months. After a quality high school season he is putting up numbers on the circuit from the lead guard spot for All-In/Young & Reckless. At 6’2” Kirk has a thin, angular, and rangy frame. He is quick off the bounce and gets in the lane with ease. Slick ball handler that has improved his ability to put combination moves together to beat a defense. Works well around ball screens where he turns the corner and attacks the rim with speed. Gets to the foul line at a high rate where he shoots it well. Plus mid-range game. Kirk has a solid feel and continues to improve as a distributor particularly in the half court. Defensively he is a pesky on ball defender that causes havoc at the point of attack. Kirk is making a run up the point guard board in the 2017 class and should be looked at by mid-major and low-major programs.
Evan Gilyard (Simeon)
Gilyard is among the top lead guards in his class. The 5’11” lefty point guard is quick and shifty with the ball with the ability to get in the lane with ease. Solid mid-range shooter that can stretch it out to three on occasion. Distribution skills are starting to come along and is a pesky defender.
PJ Pipes (Lemont)
Pipes is one of the state’s top point guards and for good reason. The powerfully built guard can flat out get buckets. Pipes is shifty with the ball in traffic and can really finish around the hoop with tremendous body control. Sound pull up jumper from mid-range. Continues to make strides as a passer. Mid-major to low-major prospect that needs to be getting more interest on the recruiting trail.
Tai Bibbs (West Chicago)
Bibbs is among the more highly recruited lead guards in the 2017 class. The West Chicago standout is a rangy 6’3” combo guard that has long arms. He is a solid mid-range shooter and streaky from three. Very smooth with the rock in his hands and works well in the pick and roll where he can turn the corner then make decisions to score or dish D1 prospect that is being looked at by low and mid-major schools.
Jimmy Sotos (Conant)
The Conant guard has had a big spring. Sotos has a nice feel for the game in the half court being able to run his team and make reads finding shooters. Speaking of shooting Sotos is a lights out three point threat particularly off the catch. Consistent mechanics with elevation off the floor. Slick ball handler that has shown he can create off the dribble using screens as well just winning one on one to get in the lane for scores. This kid is tough as nails and really competes. Low majors need to jump all over him!
