The team camp features teams from across the state, as well as an impressive team from South Dakota and one from California. What stood out the most were a few players that appeared ready to have breakout seasons.
Andre “Dre” Harris (Class of 2019) has become a familiar name in Arizona basketball, as the forward possesses arguably the best interior offensive game in the state already. This was on full display today today as he and Andres Mayberry (Class of 2017) led their Red Mountain team to a three point victory despite a resilient comeback effort from Queen Creek high school. While Dre proved to be too much to handle inside, he also showed an improved handle on the perimeter. With some solid play from the role players, and a couple players still missing for the summer, this duo looks to lead Red Mountain to a good season.
There is a buzz around Pinnacle high school with the addition of incoming freshman Nico Mannion (Class of 2020). While Mannion was in street clothes during today’s contest, his team easily handled a scrappy Buena squad. Pinnacle utilized a balanced attack on offense led by point guard Trent Brown (Class of 2019) and played excellent team defense in the win. With the addition of the explosive 2020 prospect, Pinnacle looks like a team that can withstand the loss of some key talent from last season.
The most talented squad of the day top to bottom was Mountain Pointe high school. Without the services of Logan Matulis (Class of 2017) due to a quad injury, Terrance Hunter (Class of 2018) took over the lead scoring role. Sherman Dedrick (Class of 2017) was a force on the glass and finished a couple of strong dunks in transition. With hard trapping defense on one end and a barrage of 3 pointers on the other end, the Pride easily handled Scottsdale Prep.
Valley Christian looks to have a bright future, as they have many contributing young players. Rising sophomore guard Jalen Grijalva (Class of 2019) showed poise beyond his age against the pressure defense of Moon Valley. Moon Valley guard Trevor Thompson (Class of 2017) was in constant attack mode and created good shot opportunities for himself, but just couldn’t get them to fall as his team ultimately fell to Valley Christian.
With a full slate of games set for Friday, Arizona Christian is the place to be if you want to see some good basketball.
