However, what makes this event so great for us is that we can see all of the Virginia teams as well as the top competition, which gives us the first chance to see a few kids who are under the radar.
In that spirit, we took a look at some of the best breakout performances we saw last weekend at Hoop Group Southern JamFest, and Jack Herron gives you five 2019 players that really put themselves on the map with clutch performances.
Bryce Douglas; VA Playmakers 15U
Talk about making a name for yourself, Douglas did that in a big way starting with their first round upset of District Basketball Club. The 2019 Bishop Ireton guard finished with 22 points including 7 free throws in the last two minutes to clinch the game. He showed the ability to create for himself off the bounce, and he took a beating when he got in the lane but always bounced back up looking to make a play. He’s a true scoring guard that can get it going quick and fill it up in bunches.
Oscar Tshiewebe; 6’8” PF; Team Loaded VA 15U
Coming over from WV Wildcats earlier this summer, Tshiewebe had another stellar performance that shows great signs for him moving forward. The 6’8” freshman power forward from Mount Mission showed a ridiculous never ending motor as he got after it on both ends of the floor, and his brute strength allowed him to dominate slighter bigs their age. He still has a long way to go, but his ability to run the floor, crash the boards and finish above the rim are some of the reasons he was able to have breakout games like his 21 point outing to lead Team Loaded to the 15U quarterfinals.
Devon Russell; 5’11” PG; Spectrum 15U
The Northside point guard showed a lot of signs last year, including a huge 16 point game to help them clinch the 3A West Championship over Spotswood. Russell shined in spurts during the high school season, and playing in an up-and-down style he was phenomenal. The 5’11” guard showed the ability to attack retreating defenders and finish tough shots in transition, and he’s also a good on-ball defender. Russell has a lot of ability and potential if he can put it all together.
Dominique Finney; 6’5” F; River City Reign
It was our first time seeing Finney, but after we asked about him the coaches raved about his potential. Finley is a very long 6’5″ forward that looks like he’s still growing. He’s a big time rebounder, makes plays defensively where he can guard multiple positions and he’s able to run the floor and finish in transition. He showed a few flashes in the post that he could develop a solid package of go-to moves that would take his game to the next level.
Bryan Phillips; 5’11” PG; BWSL Graves 15U
On a very talented and guard heavy team, it seems like every day there’s another guy that steps up for BWSL 15U EYBL. On Saturday in Hampton, it was Maury’s 5’11” Bryan Phillips’ turn to step up. Phillips is a very strong combo guard that can knife through the lane and use his strength to blow through light contact and finish at the rim. He’s a very good athlete and showed a lot of potential if he can work to get his shooting more consistent.
