Johquin “Pinky” Wiley, a class 2017 point guard, ran the show for the Skyhawks all season long. The all-region point guard, who averaged 10.5 points, 5.2 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per contest, took pride in embracing the moments when his team looked to him for a clutch play.
In their regional final victory vs. Hampton, Wiley calmly sank two free throws with 5 seconds left in regulation to seal the regional championship. He also sank two huge free throws back at the Vantage Hoops High School Showcase to beat then-undefeated Norcom, who captured the 3A State Championship this season. Pinky understands what it means to be able to make those kinds of plays for his team, and thrives in those situations as a result.
“That just goes with confidence,” Wiley said. “Every player should have that when you go to the line, you wanna be that player you wanna be that player to make them big free throws. People remember that.”
Earlier this season, in a showdown with John Marshall, Pinky recorded a double-double, 14 points, 12 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds while committing just 3 turnovers. This was perhaps his best overall performance of the season, as he dominated and controlled play on both ends of the court. He prides himself on being the smartest player on the floor.
“Deep in the game as a point guard, I wanna be able to handle pressure and get my team involved,” Wiley explained. “My basketball IQ is underrated. People overlook me because of my height, but I can play with anybody.”
In their state tournament victory vs. Potomac Falls, Pinky showed just how dominant he can be, by posting another double-double in a 23-point rout for the Skyhawks. The junior floor general recorded 17 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals while committing just 3 turnovers. He did all this while shooting 67 percent from the field. Wiley admits he still has some room for growth, as he looks to compete at the highest level.
“I’d still like to commit less turnovers when handling pressure,” he began. “I also am working on getting stronger, my one-two dribble pull-up, and floaters.”
Longwood and James Madison have offered the savvy lead guard, with schools such as ECU expressing serious interest. He’s been playing at a high level so far this spring for River City Reign, who will look to compete for a championship at the Hoop Group Southern Jam Fest this weekend.
