Continue ReadingJarred Vanderbilt, a 6-foot-8 junior out of Houston, Texas, proved himself as one of the top overall performers this past weekend in Hampton during the third session of the EYBL. The long-limbed playmaker displayed versatility on both ends of the court, averaging 13.5 points, 9.25 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1 block per contest while shooting 47% from the field over the course of the weekend. In a win vs. Boo Williams, he flirted with a triple-double, recording 13 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists, and 4 blocks.
Vanderbilt, who recalls playing the game for the first time around age 5, demonstrates an unselfish demeanor to go along with a strong work ethic and understanding of the game. He will do whatever it takes to get a win for his team, whether it’s defending or deferring to others.
“I’m a high motor, versatile player that can play 1 through 5 and defend 1 through 5,” he stated. “I’m just a playmaker. I try to make my teammates better.”
As he continues to cultivate his skills, perimeter shooting has been one of Vanderbilt’s main areas of focus. He aims to become a solid three-point threat and a more consistent foul shooter. Given his ability to rebound, defend, and facilitate at a high level, Jarred currently projects to the next level as a point-forward type.
“I could see myself running some point guard at the next level,” Jarred began. “I think I fit in best as a point-forward. Initiate the offense and show my playmaking ability.”
One of the more highly recruited players nationally in 2017, Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Houston, NC State, Indiana, Oregon, and Arizona are all touting the dynamic facilitator. A high academic student who owns a praiseworthy 4.3 GPA, Stanford and Harvard have also inquired regarding Vanderbilt’s services.
“I took a visit to Arizona, but that was a while back,” Vanderbilt said. When asked about upcoming visits, he responded: “Still undecided, might take some local visits, but won’t plan on flying out until the fall.”
No matter where he lands, it’s quite clear that the well-spoken junior possesses the tools and work rate to impact the game in a variety of ways.
