Coming off a productive campaign with St. Stephens St. Agnes, the class of 2017 lead guard is heading into the summer with some serious momentum. He’s always been regarded as a high energy guard who can put the ball in the basket, but his calling card of late has been his dynamic playmaking ability.
A 16 point-per game scorer during the season with the Saints, Slay enjoys running with the District because of how unselfish everyone on the squad is. About 8 guys on his current team played with him last year, and that familiarity is something he enjoys.
“We have good team chemistry,” Slay said about his AAU squad. “Nobody has an ego, everyone plays for each other and loves each other.”
As he continues to become more aggressive, improve his decision making and get more consistent with his shot, Slay believes his ability to create for others has greatly improved since the beginning of the season. He mentions that one of his best attributes is being overlooked.
“I would definitely say my passing ability is underrated,” Slay began. “I’ve always been deemed a scorer, but my passing and playmaking are some things that are really coming along.”
A high acaedmic student, who sports a strong 3.7 GPA, Slay will take a visit to NJIT next Friday, June 3. He will also attend Quinnipiac and VMI elite camps, and is considering taking a visit up to Dartmouth. St. Thomas Aquinas offered him after seeing him at the DMVelite Super Team Showcase a few weeks back. Denmark mentioned that each school who’s recruiting him mentions similar things they admire about him.
“Schools like his versatility being able to score defend and do a lot of things on the court,” he explained. “They love my passion and emotion.”
