Recruiting Report: Christian Dyches (2017)
While playing with one of the best high school teams in the country, and one of the best grassroots teams in the Northeast, Christian Dyches has certainly prepared himself for the grind of Division I basketball.
The 6-foot-7 DeMatha power forward still has a big senior season ahead of him with the Stags, and hopes to open plenty of eyes this summer playing on the Under Armour Circuit with Baltimore United. Where maybe he can pick up his first offer.
“I’ve recently been in contact with Hampton, Quinnipiac, West Virginia the most I’d say, and Mount St. Mary’s,” said Dyches.
“I would say most likely West Virginia has been showing the most interest. They saw me play in New York and I’ve been getting a lot of mail from them. And then I’ve had a few calls from Hampton. And also Kent State invited me out to their camp this summer.”
With his grassroots days winding down, Dyches says recruitment is definitely a priority for him, but also making sure his test scores are college-worthy.
“That’s (recruitment) one of my biggest priorities,” he said. “And then preparing for my SAT in October too, that should open up some more opportunities for me.”
Another option for Dyches that has recently surfaced is football. He’s going out for football this season, and says the workouts have helped him become a better basketball player. And he would not rule out playing football in college if the opportunity presented itself.
“My jump-shot has improved greatly, and I’ve gotten a lot faster and stronger, and I’ve taken up football this year so that’s helped me out. And then my footwork and my conditioning is a lot better, and all that is helping me be a better power forward,” said Dyches who addressed maybe playing football at the next level.
“I’m not really sure right now. I’ve been told that football could open up a lot of recruiting opportunities for me, so I might end up switching up — I’m not sure.”
While the sixth-man at DeMatha last season, Dyches says he was mainly just a post-presence.
“I played a lot with my back-to-the basket, and I was finishing strong and just being a presence in the post,” he said.
Next season he sees himself as having a more prominent role.
“I see myself being a starting power forward next year. We’ll have one of our biggest lineups next year. And I’m just hoping to get some more college looks and hopefully commit by the end of the year.”
In the meantime he is playing on the Under Armour Circuit Baltimore United 17U. And preparing himself for a Division I career he hopes he can pursue.
“There’s a lot of competition and great players overall, so it’s been a challenge. And I’m kind of undersized for my position so I’ve been playing against bigger and stronger guys, but it’s helping me out in a big way,” said Dyches. “I’m not sure when I’ll stop growing, so I’m getting used to playing against bigger guys, so then down the road it won’t have as much of an effect on me.”
