With the expansion of AAU basketball to the forefront of recruitment, the type of high school you attend doesn’t matter as much as far as exposure. That’s what Chris Rogers, sophomore point guard at East Rockingham, is finding out playing with Spectrum Elite 16’s early this summer.
This past high school season, Rogers was one of the better players in his class, and nobody really knew about him. The 5’11” guard averaged 15 points, 5 assists, 3 steals and shot 85% from the free throw line. After leading East Rockingham to the Conference Championship, Rogers was named First Team All Conference, and is already among the school’s all time leader in assists and steals. It didn’t come without hard work though.
“I pride myself on my work ethic and that nobody I know of puts more time in the gym than me,” Rogers said.
Chris Rogers is showing he can do it at a high level with Spectrum. The hard work has paid off in a polished and crafty guard that can play both guard positions. Rogers has a tight handle, sees the floor well, can shoot it and he lives in the lane where he makes a lot of plays. He shows a high IQ at his position because he understands the right play in every situation, whether it’s kicking it ahead in transition or rotating back in transition on a missed shot and setting up to take a charge.
Still, Rogers finds ways to improve when he’s in the gym.
“I think I was an average defender at the beginning of the high school season which ate at me,” he said. “But I’ve been focusing on improving that, making sure I’m guarding the best guard in the gym and picking up full court even in pick up games.”
Despite his work ethic and improvement, there still aren’t many schools that even know about him. However, he’s keeping an upbeat approach to it, and enjoying his time playing against higher competition.
“I just want to compete at a high level and play my game against tough competition,” Rogers said about this summer. “I feel great chemistry with this group. “It’s great playing with such high level players on my team it makes me much better.”
Whether people have noticed or not, Rogers has shined for Spectrum early this summer, averaging 14 points and 7 assists per game at the point guard spot in Pittsburgh the other weekend. If he continues this production his name will ring a bell to coaches soon enough.
