For Louisiana, there were big time games and talent in Mandeville, LA at the Grassroots Hoopfest held by South HoopFests. Title were won in the 17u group by Florida Dream, 16u by Louisiana Lightning and 15u by Louisiana Scholars. (Thanks to South HoopFests for the picture you see here).
L’Marcus Walker 6’1 PG 2016 Washington-Marion, Lake Charles Cavs
Walker was instrumental throughout the weekend for the Cavs run to the semifinals before running into the Florida Dream. That includes 26 points in the quarterfinals to lead the Cavs. Nearly unstoppable off the dribble going right.
Marquis Browder 5’10 G 2016 Madison Prep, Louisiana Razorbacks
Browder was his usual dominant self on the defensive end causing chaos for anyone who he defended. The difference this weekend was the scoring ability he showed that included 26 points in a win on Saturday.
Latrell Jones 6’2 G 2017 Archbishop Shaw, Louisiana STB Spartans
Jones had some massive scoring games that included 47 against the Mobile Hurricanes. He had other big scoring outbursts as well and was one of the talks of the tournament.
Corey Johnson Jr 6’0 PG 2018 Thibodaux High, Louisiana Lightning
Johnson controlled the tempo the way you would want any point guard to do so. His steady play allowed the players around him to shine and that’s what you want out of a leader. Rarely turns it over and always finds the open man.
Kenneth Bracken 5’10 PG 2018 White Castle, Iberville Ballers
Bracken played solid and showed off his scoring ability with a 27 point performance on Friday night despite the loss. He was one of numerous players on the Ballers roster who played hard consistently.
Rodney Munson 6’0 G 2019 De La Salle, New Orleans Elite
Munson consistently got wherever he needed to be on the court for NO Elite. Whether it was setting up others or finishing at the rim himself, Munson’s consistent attacking helped NO Elite 15s compete in the 16u division.
Blake Costello 6’0 G 2019 Team FAST
Costello’s ball handling is top notch and there was nobody that could stay in front of him one on one this weekend. If you give him space, he’s got a quick trigger with his left hand and will make open looks. Once he learns the game and how to get others involved, he’ll be trouble.
Noah Varnado 6’0 G 2019 Jesuit, Crescent City Crusaders
Varnado is built like a senior guard but just finished his freshman season. That size and physicality makes him tough for most guards to handle in high school, much less other freshman. He can score the ball off the drive or shoot it. Scored 23 in a win Friday night.
Donte Mitchell 5’9 G 2019 Rummel, Team Mitch
Mitchell was one of the best shooters in the gym in any class and really lit up the scoreboard from downtown. In the semifinal loss, he scored 20+ with six made threes after scoring on Saturday. He showed off the ability to get to the rim but his money is made outside.
Keith Lopez 6’4 F 2019 Westgate, Louisiana Scholars
Lopez was a force down low each time he stepped on the court. In general, the Scholars routinely dominated each team on the glass in route to a championship but his play really stood out as the one who drew the most attention from the opposing teams. #28 in pic below.
