Continue ReadingThis year’s Class A Spirit of Su winner was Mount Vernon-Plankinton 5-foot-9 guard Tate Deinert. Deinert was a Titan in more ways than one. Tate brought his team to the state tournament with a 16-6 record and was named all state tournament team.
“Tate had a great senior season,” said Michael Ricke, “What I will remember most about Tate is the impact that he had as a leader and his competitive spirit. I also think his work ethic was second to none. I am not sure if I ever had a player that put in more individual time on his craft than what Tate did.”
Few people put in the work that Deinert did working with his high school team and the South Dakota Heat all off-season putting gin the time to be a well rounded talent.
“Tate has grown every year as a player,” Ricke said. “I believe this year he attacked the basket better than he did in previous years. He is fearless in this regard. It just seemed like whenever we needed a big hoop, we found ourselves under the hoop, helping Tate off the floor for his “and one” free throw.’
Tate has the resume to be a college basketball player despite his size but more work must be done.
“In order to get ready for college basketball Tate just needs to continue to refine his skills. It is a more physical game and the windows for success are smaller. I don’t have any doubt that he can be an impact player at the next level. I think he will be “sleeper” catch for some program. He is skilled, extremely quick, and his athleticism makes him very explosive.”
Three schools have talked to Tate and his coach about playing for them next year.
“Mount Marty, Dakota State, and Dakota Wesleyan are all interested in him joining their programs,” Coach Ricke said.
