The 6-foot-5 2017 is hearing from all levels of college programs as he heads into his 17U season, including a couple of Midwest Division I programs.
“I’m hearing from Ferris State and Michigan Tech. American University is Division I, they contacted me just last week, so that was pretty cool. UW-GB has contacted my coach, but they haven’t contacted me yet. And then Indiana-Wesleyan has contacted me as well, they’re NAIA,” said Whitens, who also mentioned Central Michigan had recently reached out.
“I watch a lot of college basketball and I like Wisconsin-Green Bay, and their style of play. Their recruitment is very leight right now, but I’m hoping after this summer I can get on their radar a little more.”
The talented athlete is also a football and track star, and says he’s seen some interest roll in for his talents on the gridiron as well.
“I haven’t had any offers yet for football, but I have interest from schools like Central Michigan, and Michigan Tech, and Northwood,” he said.
“I haven’t really decided which I’d want to pursue in college yet. When that season comes I get jacked to play that sport. When the end of August rolls around I’m excited for football, and after that it’s basketball. But growing up I’ve always wanted to play college basketball.”
A new-age player with the ability to run the point or bang in the paint, Whitens defines his position as point-forward, and says he can make his teammates better while getting looks of his own.
“I make my teammates better by getting them the ball in the best position to score. But when it comes down to it I can score myself,” said Whitens. “I can shoot the ball pretty good, I was 50 percent field goal percentage this year, and I feel like passing is a strength.”
He mentioned some areas he’d like to improve over the course of his spring and summer while playing with Grand Rapids Storm’s 17U squad.
“Going into my senior season I would think I need to get quicker,” he said. “I’m fast and I can jump and things like that, but side-to-side just defending and getting quicker is my next step to trying and get better.”
