Continue ReadingChaparral High School lost some firepower heading into last season but developed one of the best junior tandem backcourts in the state with Colten Kresl and JT Thoman. While the Firebirds didn’t have the season they wanted, they have room for optimism next season.
“The season went well but did not go as planned,” started Kresl. “I’m looking forward to next season already.”
The 6’1” class of 2017 prospect averaged 21 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. A highly skilled combo guard, Colten shoots the ball at a high level and can make plays for others. However, he’s made great strides in other areas of his game in recent months.
“I feel that my defense and my strength have improved the most.”
In addition to becoming better defensively, Kresl’s motor and overall toughness has improved. It has greatly helped him on the defensive end.
“My offense will always be there but I can always continue to keep working on my defense and rebounding.”
Colten is playing on the travel circuit with Powerhouse Black who currently ranks as the state’s #2 17U team, sitting with an 11-2 record. Playing in the backcourt with classmate Saben Lee, they are, arguably, the best club backcourt in the state.
“We have a very talented team and we will be successful in a lot of tournaments we attend. We will also draw a lot of coaches to come watch us.”
Northern Arizona has already extended a scholarship offer to Kresl. In addition, numerous other programs have shown interest including Grand Canyon, Pepperdine, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, South Dakota State, and UMass Lowell.
“Location does not really matter to me. I’m just looking for a place I can fit in and play right away.”
Colten carries a 3.2 GPA and has already scored a 25 on his ACT.
“I have no clue when I’ll make a decision. Depends on what (offers) I pick up this summer in the July viewing period.”
